The Design, Evolution and Production of Long-Burning Hobby Rocket Motors Summary

Presentation given by Gary Rosenfield during the Virtual NARCON 2021 technical conference on 1/29/21. Gary describes how the creation and the evolution of early Composite Dynamics endburner prototypes led to the first NAR-certified long-burning composites- the AeroTech E6 and F10. He then discusses what a “moonburning” grain design is and its application to long-burning model and high-power motor applications over the past 25 years. Finally, Gary brings us up to the present with the renaissance of the end-burning composite motor including development of modern G, H & K endburning designs. The presentation concludes with a discussion of performance simulations and comparisons between long-burning and more traditional short-burn motors of similar total impulse in flight vehicles to achieve high altitudes.
