AeroTech 75mm DMS™ Head-End Ignition Forward Bulkhead Kit

Developed for the $10,000+ AeroTech Space Challenge Event

To assist competitors entering the $10,000+ AeroTech Space Challenge event, we have developed the following new product for this mission and to accompany our new 75mm N3120X-PS DMS™ rocket motor.

Please note that our new 75mm DMS Head-End Igniter Bulkhead is not TRA/NAR certified and use of it with our new 75mm N3120X-PS DMS™ rocket motor will result in an uncertified motor status and reclassification to an Experimental (EX) motor status. Although utilization of this new accessory would not be permitted at an NAR launch, all launches for the $10,000+ AeroTech Space Challenge Event will take place at the BALLS-34 EX Launch at Black Rock Desert, NV beginning in September of 2026, where EX launching is permitted. This new 75mm DMS Head-End Igniter Bulkhead is approved by AeroTech for use with our new 75mm N3120X-PS DMS™ rocket motor in the $10,000+ AeroTech Space Challenge Event. Note: This 75mm Head-End Ignition Forward Bulkhead Kit is intended for use with our new 75mm N3120X-PS DMS™ rocket motor, however, it can be used with other 75mm DMS rocket motors as long as the Black Powder amount is adjusted accordingly. Remember that use of this product will reclassify your DMS rocket motor to an uncertified EX classification.

The Triton Standard Initiator is a high-quality initiator comprised of a stainless-steel housing and featuring a high-pressure, hermetic, glass-to-metal seal that permits use in applications with operating pressures up to 10,000 psi while remaining bubble leak tight. This technology is the same sealing technology that is used in the Aerospace Industry “gold standard” initiator, the NASA Standard Initiator. The innovative TSI-200 brings this robust and highly reliable technology to the market at a single component price that is unavailable anywhere else.

Uniquely, the TSI-200 is sold as an inert electrical device thereby eliminating the logistical complications of current pyrotechnic devices. Specifically, no ATF licenses are needed to purchase and transport the product and no hazardous shipping charges are incurred. Once the customer receives the TSI-200, they fill the pyrotechnic cavity with a pyrogen of their choosing immediately prior to use.

The TSI-200 features the same MS3112E8-2P electrical interface as the NASA Standard Initiator and threads into the same 3/8-24 UNF threaded MS33649-03/AS5202-03 O-ring Boss Port as the NASA Standard Initiator. With a single-use burst pressure greater than 10,000 psi, the TSI-200 provides a reliable method of igniting pyrotechnics through a pressure tight seal simply not available in most consumer level ignition devices. You can use the TSI-200 with confidence because we individually pressure test each initiator before they are packaged for sale. RCS has designed specialized forward bulkheads to fit the Triton Standard Initiator for use with 29, 38, 54 & 75mm diameter RMS™ systems.

The Triton Standard Initiator ships as a non-hazardous item with no installed pyrotechnics. NOTE: This is a single-use device and a new initiator must be used for each motor firing.

Triton Standard Initiator Specifications

Threaded interface 3/8-24 UNF compatible with MS33649/AS5202-03 O-ring boss port. Torque to 140 in-lbs Max with 9/16" wrench.

AS568A-903 silicone O-ring included

Single Use Burst Pressure 10,000 psi.

Electrical interface:
MS3112E8-2P Bayonet Connector. Use an MS3116E8-2S connector or equivalent as the mating connector.

Bridgewire:
30 gauge (0.010”) Nichrome wire with nominal resistance of 0.3-0.5 Ω

No Fire Current:
1.5 Amps, 1.125 Watts, for 5 Minutes

Minimum Fire Current:
3 Amps for 5 seconds

All Fire Current:
>5 Amps for 100 milliseconds

TSI-200 is designed to be used with high current capable firing systems ONLY. DO NOT attempt to use low energy capacitive based firing circuits. A minimum of 3.0 Joules of energy, (e.g., a 15,000 μF Capacitor charged to 20 Volts) is required to rapidly bring the nichrome wire to incandescence and reliably ignite most pyrogens.

Instructions:

Step 1:
Measure out the desired charge weight using a reloading grain scale. The maximum charge weight is approx. 2.5 Grains.

Step 2:
Using the grain scale dish or a small funnel pour the pyrogen into the hollow cavity in the 3/8-24 threaded end of the TSI-200, taking care not to spill any of the charge.

Step 3:
Seal off the cavity filled with pyrogen by placing a drop of glue over the opening (super- glue works well). When applying glue, take care to keep the 3/8-24 threads clean as this will interfere with installation. Allow the glue to dry. The TSI-200 is ready for use.
